de la hostia / ni hostias

The word hostia, the 'host' or 'sacramental bread' taken at mass and communion, has taken on a wide range of meanings, most of which are used in informal/vulgar Spanish in Spain.

Now, although it is considered rude/blasphemous by some, use of the word hostias is widespread, and except for more formal situations it can be used pretty freely.

Remember, hostia should always be spelled with an 'h', although it is frequently seen without it.

"Se escribe siempre con 'h-', por lo que, en los usos indicados, es incorrecta la grafía ' ostia '". DPD
