A number of expressions (locuciones verbales) are formed with the pronouns la and las. Although these are fixed expressions (lexicalizadas), in many cases the pronoun refers to an underlying noun (the antecedent) that, through time, has been omitted but can still be inferred from the context.

"Un grupo numeroso de locuciones verbales contiene pronombres personales átonos, casi siempre 'lo', 'la' o 'las', cuyo referente se intuye unas veces por el contexto, pero queda sin especificar en la mayor parte de los casos".¹

For example, one of the first expressions a learner of Spanish encounters is 'pasarlo bien/mal'; in much of Latin America they say 'pasarla bien/mal'. In this expression the 'la' most likely comes from 'la situación' 'la coyuntura' or 'la circunstancia'.¹

1) In the following examples, this la –sometimes referred to as 'el femenino de indeterminación'– may refer to la cosa, la situación, la bronca, or some other omitted noun that was once understood by the context. Most of these expressions are limited to colloquial Spanish.²

-Liarla: La vamos a liar (parda) — We're going to raise a ruckus/run riot/go crazy [la situación??; read more]

-Montarla: La que se ha montado por lo de Cifuentes — What a stink they've kicked up over the Cifuentes business [La situación??]

-Caerla: Con la que está cayendo [La crisis/situación/lluvia??] / La que le va a caer cuando se entere su mujer [La bronca??; read more]

-Tenerla encima: ¿Cómo se supone que deberíamos pensar en eso, con la que tenemos encima? — How are we supposed to think about that, with all that we've got on our plate [La situación??]

-Cagarla: La has cagado, chaval — You've blown it/screwed up [La oportunidad??; read more]

-Fastidiarla: ¡Joder, Juan. Ahora sí que la has fastidiado! — Christ, Juan. You've gone and done it now! [La situación??]

-Tomarla con/tenerla tomada: Mi jefe la ha tomado conmigo; me la tiene tomada — My boss has got it in for me [La manía??]

-Emprenderla con: Mi compañero la emprendió conmigo/contra mí — My workmate took it out on me [una actitud hostil??; una cruzada??]

-Jugársela: Se la jugó al hablarlo abiertamente — He put his life/neck on the line by speaking out like that [la vida, la piel?? see jugarse la piel]

-Jugársela a alguien: ¡El cabrón me la jugó! — The bastard did the dirty on me! [una mala jugada??]

-Pegársela: Su mujer se la está pegando con su mejor amigo — His wife is cheating on him with his best friend

-Dársela a alguien (con queso): A otro perro con ese hueso. A mí no me la das — Nice try! You don't fool me [la mentira??]

-Tenérsela jurada/guardada: Ese chico me la tiene jurada/guardada — That guy has got it in for me [la venganza??]

-Palmar(la): Mi vecino (la) ha palmado — My neighbour has kicked the bucket [la vida??; read more]

-Meterla doblada: Te la han metido doblada, tío — You've been had, mate [la manta¹]

-Buscársela: No le toques las cosas; te la estás buscando — Don't touch his things. You're asking for it/trouble [una reprimenda; una bronca??]

-Ganársela: como se entere tu padre, te la vas a ganar — If your dad finds out, you're in for it [la reprimenda??]

-Hacerla (buena): ¡Ya la has hecho, hijo!; La hemos hecho buena — You've gone and done it now!; We've made a fine mess of it

-Cargársela(s): Si no sale bien te la(s) vas a cargar — If this doesn't work out well, you'll be in trouble [la responsabilidad; las consecuencias??]

-Librarse de una (buena) : ¡De la que nos hemos librado! — That was a close shave/call [la molestia, la preocupación, la responsabilidad]

The femenino de indeterminación also appears in several proverbs:

-El que la sigue la consigue — ≈Where there's a will there's a way / If at first you don't succeed, try, try again...

-El que la hace la paga — ≈You have to face the consequences for what you do /He who lives by the sword dies by the sword /

-Donde las dan las toman — ≈What goes around comes around 

-El que la busca la encuentra — ≈Seek and you shall find

2) A number of other expressions appear with the plural feminine pronoun las; here it may refer to las cosas, las dificultades, or some other feminine noun that has disappeared.

-Dárselas de: Juan se las da de cocinillas, pero no sabe nada— Juan fancies himself as/makes out he's a good cook, but he doesn't have a clue [las cualidades??]

-Arreglárselas: ¿Cómo te las arreglas para no pagar impuestos? — How do you manage to avoid paying taxes?

-Apañárselas: Me las apañaré solo — I'll manage by myself [las cosas??]

-Ingeniárselas: Juan se las ingenió para no tener que ir a trabajar — Juan managed/figured out a way of not going to work

-Traérselas: Estos ejercicios se las traen; Juan es buena gente pero se las trae — These exercises are not without difficulty; Juan is a nice guy, but he can be difficult to deal with [las dificultades??]

-Pasarlas canutas/claras/amargas/moradas — To have a rough time of it [Dificultades; circunstancias??; read more]

-Tenerlas todas consigo: Es una buena oportunidad, pero no las tengo todas conmigo — It's a good opportunity but I have some reservations [las cartas?? read more]

-Tenerlas de ganar/perder: Tiene las de perder en esta negociación — The odds are stacked against her in this negotiation [Las probabilidades/las cartas??; read more]

-Cazarlas/Pillarlas/Cogerlas al vuelo: Juan es un chico muy espabilado; siempre las coge al vuelo — Juan is a smart lad. He's always quick on the uptake [las aves²; las indirectas, las explicaciones]

-Vérselas con: Si quieres quitarme los niños, tendrás que vértelas con mi abogado — If you want to take my kids away from me, you'll have my lawyer to deal with [las caras??]

-Gastár(se)las: Todos sabemos cómo Eva (se) las gasta — We all know what Eva's like [las formas??]

-Sabérselas todas: No hay quien le pueda a mi abuelo, se las sabe todas — My grandfather can't be outdone; he knows all the tricks in the book [las respuestas??]

3) Some expressions alternate between the neuter and feminine pronoun.

-Petarlo/la: Lo/la vamos a petar — We're going to bring the house down/kick ass

-Llevarlo/la claro/a: Lo/la llevas claro/a si crees que voy a rendirme — You've got another think/thing coming if you think I'm going to give up

-Montárselo/la bien: ¡Qué bien te lo/la has montado, cabrón! — You've certainly got a great set-up here/got it made, you swine! [La vida; la situación??]

-Pagarlo/la con alguien: no lo/la pagues con ella. Fue culpa mía — Don't take it out on her. It was my fault [La culpa??]

-Pagarlas/la/lo: ¡Me las/la/lo pagarás! — You'll pay for this!
