whenever, wherever, whatever, whoever |
When it comes to translating 'wherever', 'whenever', 'whatever', whoever', and 'whether' into Spanish, we are faced with a somewhat overwhelming range of options, some of which are more common than others.
Note that, in Spain, the forms dondequiera/ cuandoquiera/ comoquiera/ quienquiera (always one word) are generally limited to formal/written Spanish.
The most common form in the vast majority of contexts is a relative pronoun/adverb followed by the subjunctive, e.g. lo que/donde/como quieras; or, alternatively, the so-called forma reduplicativa –where the verb in subjunctive is repeated, e.g. pase lo que pase, lo hagas como lo hagas, etc.1-2
Wherever
-Puedes usarlo, estés donde estés/vivas donde vivas — You can use it wherever you are/live
→Puedes usarlo, dondequiera que estés/vivas
→→Puedes usarlo, allá donde estés/vivas
→→→Puedes usarlo en España, en Francia o donde sea (que estés) — You can use it in Spain, France or wherever (you are)
-Vayas (a)donde vayas te encontraré — Wherever you go I'll find you [The 'a' is optional with 'donde' when used with verb of movement to a place3]
→Adondequiera que vayas te encontraré [The 'a' should be used for verbs of movement to a place, but it is often omitted4]
→→Allá donde vayas te encontraré
→→→Sea (a)donde sea que vayas te encontraré
-Fuera (a)donde fuera me lo encontraba — Wherever I went I bumped into him
→Allá donde iba me lo encontraba
→→Adondequiera que iba, me lo encontraba [The indicative can be used with 'dondequiera' for past/present facts]
Whenever
-Cógelo cuando quieras/lo necesites/puedas — Grab it whenever you want/need it/can
→Cógelo cuandoquiera que lo necesites
→→Cógelo (sea) cuando sea (que lo necesites) — Grab it whenever (you need it)
-Siempre que venía, llamaba antes — Whenever he came, he phoned beforehand [Past/present]
→Siempre que vengas, llama antes — Whenever you come, phone beforehand [Future -read more]
As discussed in relative clauses, the subjunctive is used for an unknown/unidentified antecedent.
-Haré lo que quieras/me pidas — I'll do whatever you want/ask of me
-Hagas lo que hagas, no se lo cuentes a ella — Whatever you do, don't tell her
-Cueste lo que cueste, te lo voy a comprar — Whatever it costs, I'm going to buy it for you
-Haré lo que sea con tal de recuperarte — I'll do whatever it takes to get you back
-Sea lo que sea, no lo quiero en mi casa — Whatever it is/Either way, I don't want it in my house
Sometimes 'whatever' is better translated as 'whichever' in Spanish when referring to a choice of a limited number of things. [See qué vs. cuál]
-Te voy a respetar, sea cual sea tu decisión — I'm going to respect you, whatever your decision is/may be
-Coge el que prefieras — Take whatever/whichever one you want
Sometimes 'whatever' means 'all that'.
-Haré todo lo que/cuanto pueda para ayudarte — I'll do whatever I can to help you
-Cuenta conmigo para todo lo que necesites — Count on me for whatever you need
Whoever
-Quien dijera/haya dicho eso es tonto — Whoever said that is stupid
→Quienquiera que dijera eso/haya dicho eso es tonto
→→(Sea) Quien sea que lo dijo/dijera es tonto — Whoever it was that said that is stupid
-El que/quien quiera ir puede hacerlo ahora — Whoever wants to leave can do so now
-Fuera quien fuera, no era de aquí — Whoever it was, they weren't from around here
→Quienquiera que fuera, no era de aquí
-Quien marca más puntos gana — The person who/whoever scores most points wins [General truth]
→Quien marque más puntos ganará — Whoever scores most points will win
However
As discussed previously, 'however + adjective/adverb' usually translates as por muy/mucho que.
-Hazlo como quieras/sea/puedas — Do it however you want/can
-Lo hagas como lo hagas, no te olvides de echar aceite — However you do it, don't forget to add oil
→Comoquiera que lo hagas, no te olvides de echar aceite
-Por mucho que lo intentes, no lo conseguirás — However hard you try, you won't manage it
-Por muy listo que sea, no me interesa — I'm not interested, no matter how/ however smart he is/may be
-Hay que esperar unos 5 ó 10 minutos, o el tiempo que tarde — You'll have to wait about 5 or 10 minutes, or however long it takes
-Estés o no (estés) de servicio — Whether you're on duty or not [The second verb tends to be omitted after the 'no', but it can be kept for added effect]
-Te guste o no — Whether you like it or not [= tanto si te gusta como si no]
-Sea el mejor o no, lo quiero en mi equipo — Whether he's the best or not, I want him on my team

-Te lleve al cine o te haga una cena rica, seguro que va a ser una cita inolvidable — Whether he takes you to the cinema or cooks you a delicious meal, I'm sure it will be an unforgettable date [=tanto si te lleva al cine como si te hace una cena rica]
-Llueva o haga sol saldremos a las 8 — Whether it's raining or sunny, we'll leave at 8
-A mí me interesa cualquier arte, se trate de esculturas o de óleos — I'm interested in any art, whether it's sculptures or oils
-Necesitamos más materiales para terminar el muro, (ya) sea ladrillo o cimiento — We need more material to finish the wall, whether it be/either bricks or cement
