A common confusion for English-speaking learners arises when it comes to choosing the correct demonstrative pronoun for the subject of the verb 'ser': should it be the neuter form eso/esto or should it agree with the noun, i.e. ese/esa, este/esta? (For use of the tilde -read article.)
It is not always a straightforward decision; sometimes both are possible, with a subtle change in meaning.
There are several factors to take into consideration:1-2
1. The neuter demonstratives should be avoided when referring to people or domestic animals, except when used to introduce a joke.
-Este es mi novio Juan — This (guy) is my boyfriend Juan
-Esta es mi madre —This (woman) is my mother
-Esta es Kenia, mi perrita favorita — This is Kenya, my favourite doggy
-Esto es un inglés que entra en un restaurante y le pide al camarero el menú del día... — An Englishman goes into a restaurant and asks the waiter for the set menu...
2. When referring to a type or nature of a thing, use the neuter. Imagine the question "¿Qué es?"
-En una tienda mirando tablets: 'Eso es lo que quiero' (ese tipo de tablet/cosa) — That's what I want
-¿Esto qué es? Me han pinchado las ruedas, joder -Eso es un problema, eso es lo que es — What's this? I've had my tires slashed, fuck -That's a problem; that's what it is
-¿Qué es eso? - ¿Esto es un ordenador de última generación? — What's that (thing)? -This is a state-of-the-art computer
-Esto es un equipo, vamos a trabajar juntos — This (group of people playing at the same time) is a team; we're going to work together
-Esto es un desastre. Hace semanas que no tenemos agua — This (situation) is a disaster. We've not had water for weeks
3. When referring to a specific thing, use the masculine or feminine pronoun. Answering the question ¿Cuál es?
-En una tienda mirando tablets: 'Esa es la que quiero' (esa tablet en concreto) — That's the one I want
-¿Y ese ordenador? -Este es mi nuevo ordenador; vendí el otro — -And what's that computer? -This (one) is my new computer; I sold the other one
-¿Cuál es el problema? -No tenemos dinero; ese es el problema — What's the problem? -We don't have any money; that's the problem
-Este es un equipo de primera categoría; hay que dar el 100% — This (team) is a first division team; everyone has to give 100%
-Este es un desastre de gran magnitud — This (disaster/one) is a disaster of epic proportions
4. If using the definite article, then it should probably be the masculine or feminine form.
-¿Creemos lo que nos dice? Esa es la pregunta — Do we believe what he's telling us? That's the question
-No hay dinero. Ese es el problema — There's no money. That's the problem
-(Viendo mesas en una tienda) Esta es la mejor para tu cocina — This is the best one for your kitchen
→Esto es lo mejor para tu cocina — This is the best thing for your kitchen [See 'lo' referencial]
5. If using the indefinite article, then it is probably the neuter form; however, if the noun is modified in some way, restricting it from others of its class, then the masculine or feminine form may be more appropriate.
-¿Eso es una pregunta? — Is that a question?
→Esa es una muy buena pregunta — That's a very good question
-Lo siento, no te puedo pagar. No tengo dinero -Eso es un problema — That (situation/what you've said) is a problem
→Este es un problema que todos debemos afrontar — This (one/problem) is a problem that we all must face
