no sé qué no sé cuánto
Commonly heard in conversational Spanish, the following expressions are used when the speaker doesn't want to go into detail when mentioning additional items or ideas in some way related to the ones previously mentioned. Like in English, they are often just crutch words or filler used to maintain the flow of the discourse.
1) Similar to 'and whatnot' or 'and all that' in English, no sé qué (no sé cuánto) often implies that the information being referred to lacks importance or sense, or the speaker may even consider it bothersome or excessive. [See also un no sé qué]
-Me dijo que tenía problemas de salud y no sé qué no sé cuánto — He said he had health problems, etcetera, etcetera
-Te piden mogollón de datos: tu DNI, tu seguro de vida y no sé qué no sé cuánto — They ask for loads of details: your ID, your life insurance, and this, that and the other
-Me echó en cara lo que hice, diciéndome que yo era mal padre y no sé qué no sé cuánto — He reproached me for what I did, saying that I wasn't a good father and all that kind of thing
-Te dicen que eres un inútil y no sé qué, y que no vas a poder y no sé qué/cuánto — They tell you that you are useless and stuff, and that you're not going to be able to cope and all that
2) Other similar expressions used to refer to unspecified similar things are y tal, y demás and y tal y cual.
-Reúne todos nuestros requisitos. Tiene piscina, y jardín y tal y cual, pero aun así hay algo que no me gusta — It meets all our needs. It has a swimming pool, a garden, and so on and so forth, but still there's something I don't like about it
-Cuando estuvimos en Roma vimos el Coliseo y la Fuente de Trevi, y demás — When we were in Rome we saw the Coliseum and the Trevi Fountain, and whatnot/so on
-El dueño fue muy amable. Nos enseñó el jardín y tal — The owner was really friendly. He showed us the garden and all that
3) Similarly, (que si) patatín (que si) patatán is used to summarize things that the speaker thinks lack importance or are not worth mentioning—often excuses or apologies.1
This expression often uses the que si... que si construction discussed in a previous article.
-Juan llegó a casa borracho pidiendo disculpas; que si no era su culpa, que si patatín que si patatán — Juan came home drunk, apologising, saying it wasn't his fault and this, that and the other
-Siempre vienes con las mismas excusas, que si no tienes tiempo, patatín patatán — You always come to me with the same excuses: either you don't have time or this, that and the other
En La Prensa
Yo alucinaba en colores, macho, una conversación y... después de... apalabrar lo que se iba a llevar, lo que no sé qué, no sé cuánto, y me dijo (con acento argentino): Pablito, te pido una cosa, que no se entere El Pelusa (risas). EL PAÍS-16 may. 2017
