The relative adverb donde and the relative pronoun quien are often followed by the infinitive; learners and natives alike tend to hesitate when adding the tilde in these cases.
1) As the direct object of the verbs tener and haber, in negative and interrogative sentences especially, the thing being referred to (the antecedent) is often omitted, in which case donde and quien become 'relativos sin antecedente expreso' (and according to some, interrogative pronouns/adverbs as well); donde and quien can take the tilde, but it is not required.1
donde: "En oraciones subordinadas de infinitivo dependientes de los verbos 'haber' y 'tener', hay vacilación entre la pronunciación tónica y átona de este adverbio. En estos casos puede interpretarse como interrogativo y escribirse con tilde, o como relativo sin antecedente expreso y escribirse sin ella".2
"El interrogativo quién encabeza las oraciones subordinadas de infinitivo dependientes de los verbos 'haber' o 'tener': «Sin deudas, porque no había con quién contraerlas»".3
Although the DPD describes the version with tilde as an interrogative adverb/pronoun, the NGLE insists that the presence of the tilde represents the stressed pronunciation (tónica), but the adverb/pronoun remains a relative one.
"Pueden llevarla [tilde] o no en los contextos en los que pueden pronunciarse como formas tónicas (No tenía dónde ir) o como formas átonas (No tenía donde ir). Estos infinitivos aceptan asimismo la elipsis que caracteriza a las interrogativas truncadas: Necesitaba un sitio en que alojarme, y ya tengo dónde. Estas semejanzas no implican un cambio en su naturaleza categorial. Se siguen considerando, pues, relativos y no de interrogativos".4
Technical jargon aside, both forms are possible when there is no antecedent. In the following examples donde means "un lugar en que", and quien is 'alguien que'.5
-No hay donde/dónde sentarse — There is nowhere to sit
-No tenemos adonde/adónde (donde/dónde) ir — We have nowhere to go [Preposition 'a' is optional -read more]
-No tiene donde/dónde caerse muerto — He doesn't have a pot to piss in
-No había con quien/quién hablar — There was no one to talk to
-¿Tienes dónde/donde alojarte? — Do you have anywhere to stay?
2) With an antecedent, meanwhile, donde is a normal relative adverb, meaning 'en el/la que'; quien means 'el/la que' –neither should take the tilde. Note that the infinitive is generally only possible when the noun is used with an indefinite determiner (e.g. algún, un, alguien) – see infinitive in relative clauses.
-Cerca del supermercado hay una panadería donde (≈en la que) encontrar pan fresco — Near the supermarket there is a bakery where you can find fresh bread
→Cerca del supermercado está la panadería donde compro (comprar??) el pan [With a definite determiner, neither the verb 'haber' nor the infinitive is possible]
-Buscan una playa donde tumbarse — They are looking for a beach where they can lie down / to lie down on
→Buscan la playa donde uno puede tumbarse desnudo [With a definite determiner, the infinitive is not possible]
-¿Hay algún sitio donde comprar pan? — Is there anywhere to buy bread?
-¿Tienes (a) alguien con quien hablar? — Do you have anyone to talk to?
3) As discussed previously, when there is no antecedent, the pronoun que usually takes the tilde.
-No tienes de qué avergonzarte (No tienes nada de (lo) que avergonzarte)
-No tengo por qué callarme
-No hay de qué preocuparse
