La idea es que + subjuntivo |
1) Expressions that indicate intention or desire in the main clause are usually followed by the subjunctive in the subordinate clause. Similar to English, la idea es que usually expresses how we would like or expect things to happen, so it is nearly always used with the subjunctive. Similar expressions that indicate how things are actually done (una constatación) may alternate with the indicative.
-La idea es que tengas unos conocimientos básicos antes de empezar — The idea is that you (should) have some basic knowledge before starting [The speaker/writer is not declaring or informing that 'tienes unos conocimientos', but rather 'se espera que los tengas o el objetivo es que los tengas']
-La idea era que terminaras esto ayer, pero veo que no has podido — The idea was that you were to finish this yesterday, but I see you haven't been able to
→La idea era terminar esto ayer — The idea was to finish this yesterday [Followed by the infinitive (same subject)]
-Lo hizo con la idea de que sus amigos se unieran a él — He did it hoping his friends would join him
-La metodología se basa en que cada usuario estudie [se espera que cada usuario estudie]/estudia [así es como funciona] 2 horas diarias — The methodology is based on each student studying 2 hours a day
-El truco consiste en que no hay gluten en la masa — The trick lies in the fact that there is no gluten in the dough [≈No hay gluten - see consistir en (que)]
→El truco consiste en que no haya gluten en la masa — The trick lies in not having any gluten in the dough [≈No debe haber gluten]
2) Similarly, both the indicative and the subjunctive are possible after constructions such as el tema es que, el caso es que, la cosa es que, la cuestión es que/está en que, etc. When we are affirming what we consider to be a fact (una constatación), we use the indicative; when we are expressing a desire or preference, the subjunctive is used (considerably less common).
-El tema es que la gente elige su producto favorito — The point is that people choose their favourite product [fact; what actually happens]
→El tema es que la gente elija su producto favorito — The issue is people choosing their favourite product [what is hoped for or necessary]
-El caso es que estamos juntos ahora — The fact/point is that we are together now [See el caso es que]
→El caso es que estemos juntos cuando pase — The important thing is that we are together when it happens
→→El caso es estar juntos — It's about being together [Followed by infinitive; ≈lo importante es/se trata de]
-La cosa es que no tenemos suficientes recursos para terminar el proyecto
→La cosa es que tengamos suficientes recursos para terminar el proyecto
-La cuestión es que se ha garantizado el buen uso de la lengua
→La cuestión es que se garantice el buen uso de la lengua
3) Remember: just like the construction lo +adjective+es que, if the main intention is to declare or inform of a fact in the subordinate clause, the indicative is used; while if the main intention is to comment on the information in the subordinate clause, the subjunctive is preferred (see no declaración). Therefore, constructions such as la igualdad es que, la libertad es que also tend to take the subjunctive mood, since they are affirming what these things should be rather than declaring than stating a reality.
-La libertad es que cada uno viva y haga lo que le apetece — Freedom is each person living and doing what they feel like [The speaker is not declaring or informing that 'cada uno vive y hace lo que le apetece', but rather defining what they think 'la libertad' is/should be]
-La igualdad es que todas las personas tengan la posibilidad de vivir vidas dignas — Equality is everyone getting the chance to live a decent life
-Lo importante es que vives/ vivas y haces /hagas lo que te apetece [es lo que en realidad haces/me parece importante hacerlo] — The important thing is that you live and do as you please
-Se trata de que seamos libres [eso es lo que se espera o se necesita] — It's about/a matter of us being free
