Este tipo de cosas

A common confusion arises when translating tipo de from Spanish into English. While in English, with countable nouns, we almost always use singular with singular and plural with plural, in Spanish the most common construction is singular with plural, or sometimes singular with singular if you are referring to a single noun.

1) When followed by a noun in plural (e.g. este tipo de cosas), tipo de is treated like other partitive constructions such as la mayoría de, el resto de, etc., where the verb can be conjugated either in singular or plural in most contexts –read more.1

"La mayor parte de estos cuantificadores admiten la concordancia con el verbo tanto en singular como en plural, dependiendo de si se juzga como núcleo del sujeto el cuantificador singular o el sustantivo en plural que especifica su referencia, siendo mayoritaria, en general, la concordancia en plural".2

-This type/kind/sort of thing annoys me  — Este tipo de cosas me fastidia(n) [≈Cosas como esta me fastidian / Me fastidia este tipo (de cosas)]

-I like this type of novel Este tipo de novelas me gusta(n) [Me gustan novelas de este tipo / Me gusta este tipo]

-I am looking for another type of house — Busco otro tipo de casa [Busco una casa de otro tipo]

-Why do people always ask me these kinds of questions? — ¿Por qué la gente siempre me hace este tipo de preguntas?

2) When the noun is uncountable, in both English and Spanish it goes in singular. Remember, though, that some nouns are countable in Spanish but not in English.

-Goat's milk is better than other types/kinds of milk— La leche de cabra es mejor que otros tipos de leche

-We won't stand for this type of behaviour —  No toleramos este tipo de comportamientos [Countable in Spanish –read more]

3) However, if it is a linking verb (e.g. ser, estar or parecer) accompanied by a subject complement (el atributo), or when there is a complemento predicativo, the verb nearly always agrees with the plural noun.

"Sin embargo, cuando el verbo lleva un atributo o un complemento predicativo, solo es normal la concordancia en plural".3

-Este tipo de cosas son muy molestas

-Ese tipo de novelas pareceinteresantes a primera vista

-Ese tipo de personas siempre salen perjudicadas
