In the Spanish-speaking world there are several ways of saying "to take a photo/picture".
In Spain, by far the most common construction is hacer una foto.
-¿Me haces una foto, por favor? — Could you take a photo of/for me, please?
-Se hizo una foto con sus amigos — He took a photo of himself with his friends
-Le hizo una foto a mi hermano — He took a photo of my brother
Normally, 'to take a photo of sb'= hacerle una foto a alguien', and 'to take a photo of sth'= hacer una foto de algo.1
Sometimes you will see hacerle una foto de, where the le is the dativo de interés rather than the thing the photo is being taken of.
-Hice una foto del puerto — I took a photo of the port
-¿Me haces una foto del coche? — Could you take a picture of the car for me
-Le hice una foto del puerto (para mi hermano) — I took a photo of the port for him
Tomar una foto is the norm in much of Latin America; in Spain it may sound more artistic or formal. Speakers from Mexico will rarely say hacer una foto.
-¿Me tomas una foto? — Could you take a photo of me?
-Tomó una foto del puerto — He took a picture of the port
-Tomamos una foto del grupo / le tomamos una foto al grupo — We took a photo of the group
-Le tomó una foto a su abuelo — He took a picture of his grandfather
Sacar una foto is sometimes heard in colloquial Spanish in Spain; echar una foto is even more colloquial and not generally seen in written Spanish. [See echar+sustantivo]
-¿Me sacas una foto? — Could you take a photo of me?
-Sacó una foto del puerto — He took a photo of the port
-Se sacó una foto con su novia — He took a photo with his girlfriend
-Echamos algunas fotos del puerto — We took some photos of the port
As discussed previously, the preposition de can alternate with the pronoun le (dativo) with verbs of removal or extraction, such as sacar, tomar, and quitar. The pronoun le is more likely to be used when not repeating the complemento indirecto.
-Saqué una foto del puerto → Le saqué una foto (al puerto)
-¿Tomaste alguna foto del niño? → Sí, le tomé unas cuantas (al niño)
The verb fotografiar is also frequent, although it is generally more formal and sounds more technical/artistic, much like using 'photograph' instead of 'photo'.
-Fotografió el puerto — He took a photograph of the port
-Se fotografiaron delante de la catedral — They took a photograph of themselves in front of the cathedral
