dejar de / parar de hacer algo
Although the constructions dejar de+infinitivo and parar de+infinitivo can both translate as 'to stop doing something', they are often not interchangeable. In the vast majority of cases parar de in used in the negation.1
1) Unlike dejar de+infinitivo, parar de+infinitivo is generally only used when the subject is the agent, i.e. the 'doer' of an action, normally implying will, intention or control - see discussion.
"Parar de +infinitivo se caracteriza por exigir sujetos que se suelen interpretar como agentes (No paras de hablar) o al menos como experimentadores de algún cambio: 'si te moja la lluvia de este tiempo, el pelo no parará de crecerte'".2
-Cuando le conté lo del accidente paró de hablar — When I told him about the accident he stopped talking (agency; he stopped doing sth)
→Después del accidente dejó de hablarme — After the accident he stopped talking to me (no agency; the activity stopped)
-Con la entrada de la noche, los efectivos aéreos pararon de trabajar — When it started getting dark, air support called it a day (agency; subject acting on the verb)
→La máquina dejó de funcionar — The machine stopped working (no agency; unaccusative verb)
- La luz dejó (paró) de parpadear — The light stopped flickering (no agency; unaccusative verb)
-Dejó (paró) de llegar tarde — He stopped arriving late (no agency; unaccusative verb)
2) In passive constructions and with stative verbs the subject is not the agent, therefore parar de is not used (except where the stative verb actually refers to an activity or action.*)3
-No dejó (paró) de ser humillado — He kept being humiliated
-Dejaron (pararon) de ser útiles — They stopped being useful
-María dejó (paró) de ser feliz —Maria stopped being happy
-Desde que empezaste con el nuevo trabajo no paras de tener* servicio nocturno — Since you started at your new job, you always have nightshift
3) Although there is no agent, parar de is also common with impersonal verbs, normally in the negation.
-No para de llover — It won't stop raining
-A ver si para de hacer frío — Let's see if the cold weather stops
4) Parar de is used far more in negative constructions. In many cases it is more or less synonymous with dejar de+infinitivo; other times parar de+infinitivo suggests that the activity is interrupted by the subject, while dejar de suggests that the activity may be permanently abandoned.
-No deja de fumar — He doesn't/won't stop smoking (He won't give up; focus on the habit)
→No para de fumar — He won't stop smoking / He keeps smoking (Focus on the action)
-Nunca dejó de decirme que me quería —He never stopped telling me that he loved me
→No paraba de decirme que me quería — He kept telling me that he loved me
-No para / deja de llegar tarde — He keeps turning up late
-No para de llover / No deja de llover — It won't stop raining / The rain won't let up
5) In negative imperative sentences, dejar de+verb also has the so-called 'lítote' interpretation when referring to one-off actions or closed-ended events. This is where, instead of 'stopping doing something', it refers to not omit or not 'not do' something. Occasionally this can lead to ambiguity.
"En 'El día que cierren la casa no dejen de avisarme', no se denota el cese de ningún estado de cosas, sino que se pide a alguien que no omita la realización de cierta acción".2
-No dejes de ver el museo — Make sure to visit the museum
-No dejes de comprarme uno — Make sure to buy me one
-No dejes de mirar por la ventana — 1. Don't stop looking out of the window (actividad sin fin) / 2. Be sure to look through the window (acción puntual) [Sin más contexto, puede ser ambiguo]
6) In non-imperative sentences, no dejar de is used to attenuate an affirmation, usually with stative verbs.
"Seguida de un infinitivo, se usa para afirmar de una manera atenuada o irónica lo expresado por él".4
-No deja de ser raro — It's strage all the same
-La cosa no deja de tener su gracia — It has its funny side
-No dejó de sentir alivio al pensar que el sueño había desaparecido — He couldn't help feeling relieved when he thought that the dream had slipped away
