¡andando! - Gerundio como imperativo |
With a limited number of verbs, the gerund is commonly used with an imperative meaning.
"El uso interjectivo, y en particular, exhortativo del gerundio está en expansión en la lengua actual".1
-Vamos, ¡andando! — Let's get a move on!
-No hay nada que ver aquí. ¡Circulando! — There's nothing to see here. Keep moving!
-¡Arriba, corriendo! — Get up. Hurry along!
In Spain, marchando is used in restaurants and bars to indicate that an order that has just been placed is under way, but it can also be used like the imperative to urge someone to process an order.
-Cuatro cervezas y un plato combinado -Marchando — -Four beers and a mixed platter -Coming up
-¡Marchando cuatro cervezas, Juan! — Four beers on the double, Juan
The construction gerundio+ que es gerundio is used to urge people on in a humorous way.2
-Arreando, que es gerundio — Let's get a move on
-Recogiendo, que es gerundio — Let's get this place cleaned up
As discussed previously, in colloquial Spanish, the construction 'ya+estar+gerundio' is used to express an order that the speaker wishes to be obeyed urgently/immediately.3
-Si vienes a molestar a mi hijo, ya te estás largando — If you've come to bother my son, you can clear off right now
-Ya te estás disculpando con tu madre — Apologize to your mum immediately
