Sin terminar /no deseado/ poco razonable |
Although sometimes the prefix un- can be translated to Spanish directly with the prefixes in or des (e.g. unfair-injusto; uncontrolled-descontrolado; undecided-indeciso; etc.), often we have to express the opposite or negation using other means.
1) When the noun is followed by a transitive verb denoting completion or fulfilment of an event, un+participle can usually be translated as sin +infinitivo . It is often interchangeable with the construction por+infinitivo .1-2
-Hay muchas camas sin hacer — There are lots of unmade beds
→Hay muchas camas por hacer — There are lots of beds (needing) to be made
-Una pila de recibos sin pagar — A pile of unpaid bills
→Una pila de recibos por pagar — A pile of bills (needing) to be paid
-La lata está sin abrir — The can is unopened
-El cuerpo estaba sin cubrir — The body was uncovered
2) With certain verbs, the se denoting pasiva refleja is optional, since the construction is already passive-like.2
-Medidas todavía sin anunciar(se) — Measures still to be announced/ still unannounced
-El problema sigue sin solucionar(se) — The problem is still to be resolved/ still unresolved
3) In many cases sin+infinitivo can alternate with no+participio . 3
-Un libro no terminado / sin terminar/ inacabado — An unfinished book
-Hechos no confirmados / sin confirmar — Unconfirmed facts
-Una pregunta no contestada / sin contestar — An unanswered question
-Hay muchos delitos no denunciados / sin denunciar — There are many unreported crimes
-Un coche no asegurado / sin asegurar — An uninsured car
4) However, when referring to a state or an atelic event (i.e. one that has no natural endpoint-read more) the sin+infinitivo option cannot be used.
-Un niño no deseado — An unwanted child [Un niño sin desear??]
-Un hecho no relacionado — An unrelated fact
-Era algo no esperado / inesperado — It was something unexpected
5) In many other cases, where no and sin are not possible, adding the adverb poco before the adjective is often the best translation for the prefix un-.
-Es un coche poco fiable — It's an unreliable car
-Estás siendo poco razonable — You are being unreasonable
-La tierra es poco productiva — The land is unproductive
-Lo que propones es poco práctico — What you're proposing is impractical/ unpractical
-Poco realista — Unrealistic
-Poco probable — Unlikely
-Poco saludable — Unhealthy
-Poco factible/ Inviable — Unfeasible
