According to the RAE tirar piedras sobre/contra/a su propio tejado means "Conducirse de manera perjudicial a sus intereses"; in other words, it means acting in a way that is detrimental to your own interests.
The two main translations you will find online are 'to shoot oneself in the foot' and 'to cut off one's nose to spite one's face'. While in some contexts these are good options, they don't always sound natural.
'To cut off one's nose to spite one's face' can only be used when the person is trying to harm another in an act of revenge or anger, without realizing or caring that they are hurting themselves in the process. This definition works in the following examples:

However, the Spanish expression often refers to self-destructive or counterproductive behaviour that is unintentional and does not come about as a result of trying to hurt others –for example through making bad decisions or through stupidity. Here 'to shoot oneself in the foot' is usually the best option, but an alternative translation may be more appropriate, such as 'to foul one's own nest'.
