¿Cuántos sois? - Somos muchos |
A common mistake among Spanish-speaking learners of English is to say 'subject + are' instead of 'there +are' when talking about the existence of a number of things. In Spanish, it is far more natural to say 'somos veinte' than 'hay veinte de nosotros'.
In English, the subject complement (el atributo) of linking verbs ('to be', 'to seem', etc.) cannot normally be a quantifier or number; in Spanish, this is very common.
-Somos veinte (personas) — There are twenty of us (We are twenty)
-¿Cuántos sois? — How many of you are there? ( How many are you?)
-Éramos muchos — There were a lot of us ( We were many)
-Son muchos los problemas que causa la comida rápida — Fast food causes many problems/ There are many problems caused by fast food (They are many...)
-Son varias las provincias afectadas — Several provinces have been affected / There are several provinces affected (They are several...
-Parecen pocos los casos de este tipo, pero son demasiados — There seem to be few cases of this kind, but there are too many/they are too frequent (They seem to be few)
To talk about the presence of people in a place rather than their existence in general, estar can be used instead of ser. Unlike English, estar can be used alone without any adverbial of place —something that can sound odd to learners.
-Estábamos unas 20 personas (en la cafetería) — There were about 20 of us (in the cafe) /About 20 of us were in the cafe
-¿Está tu madre? -No, no está — -Is your mum there? -No, she's not here/in
-Si no hubiera conocido a Juan, a lo mejor yo ni estaría — If I hadn't met Juan, I might not even be alive/here
-Gracias por tu ayuda -De nada. Para eso estamos — -Thanks for your help. -Don't mention it. That's what we're here for
-Somos poca gente (en el pueblo) — There are few of us (in the village) [Poca gente compone la población del pueblo]
→Estamos poca gente (en el pueblo) — There are few of us (in the village) [Poca gente está presente en el pueblo; más circunstancial]
