resultar + participio / salir + participio |
The constructions resultar+participio/adjetivo and salir+participio/adjetivo have two interpretations and some overlap:
1. Cambio de estado
In this first sense, both verbs can be used with atributos (subject complements) that denote harm, damage, or losing out, e.g. dañado, derrotado, herido, perjudicado, malparado, tocado, mutilado, etc.; or, alternatively, atributos that denote improvement, lack of harm or advantage, e.g. airoso, beneficiado, compensado, gratificado, intacto, mejorado, etc. In some cases they are interchangeable.
-Tres personas resultaron/salieron heridas — Three people were injured
-El cristal resultó/salió intacto — The glass came out in one piece
-No fue un trato justo. Juan salió/resultó perjudicado — It wasn't a fair deal. Juan came out of it badly
-Salimos airosos — We came through it unscathed
-El hombre salió malparado del accidente — The man came out of the accident in a bad way
-Si intentas negociar con ellos, siempre saldrás perdiendo — If you try and negotiate with them, you'll always end up losing out ['Salir ganando' y 'salir perdiendo' son dos expresiones fijas con el gerundio]
-Con el Brexit, algunos sectores van a salir ganando — Some sectors will do well out of the Brexit
2. Experimentación, manifestación o constatación
Since we are talking about the confirmation or realization of a certain quality, rather than a change of state, this second interpretation is generally only possible with those atributos that are compatible with the verb ser (rather than estar); however, the verb resultar does accept atributos that include the verb estar. In this second sense, the verbs salir and resultar are rarely interchangeable, and salir is generally only used this way when it appears with the indirect object (dativo de interés).
"Como se ve, no se expresa un cambio de estado en 'El coche me salió malo', sino más bien el hecho de llegar a la conclusión de que el coche poseía dicha propiedad, por lo tanto el poder constatarla".2
La proposición era absurda
→La proposición resultaba absurda [Se percibía o se constataba]
-Resultó estar enfermo [Ya estaba enfermo, pero en ese momento este estado se descubrió o se manifestó]
-El coche me salió barato/malo [Experimentación/constatación]
-El examen me salió bien/mal [Experimentación/constatación]
-No te va a salir gratis [Experimentación]
-La prueba salió positiva [Manifestación/constatación]
Resultar is used with the indirect object to show that the quality being confirmed/experienced is subjective.
-Me resulta intolerable
-Le resultaba incómodo
Resultar+adjetivo often alternates with resultar ser +adjetivo.4
Resultó absurdo/Resultó ser absurdo
-Las casa resultaba pequeña/resultaba ser pequeña
Resultar+estar cannot normally alternate with resultar+participio since without estar it usually denotes a change.
-Resultó dañado [Se dañó; cambio]
-Resultó estar dañado [Resulta que estaba dañado; constatación]
Resultar can also be followed by a noun; this is rare with salir, although there are some exceptions.3
-La idea resultaba un despropósito
-La misión resultó un fracaso
-Salió alcalde [Resultado, cambio]
-El chico (le) salió rana [Constatación]
Salir is more common when expressing a resulting emotional state, where someone has come away from something feeling a certain way.3
-Salir contento/emocionado/satisfecho/amargado/cabreado [Un cambio; resultó contento??]
Both are often possible to express the result of a decision or process.3
-Resultar/salir absuelto, confirmado, elegido, exculpado, galardonado, imputado, investido, nombrado, premiado, proclamado
Resultar is common when expressing changes in state, especially negative ones relating to health and coming about as a result of hostile actions.4
-Resultar activado, ampliado, atenuado, cambiado, debilitado, devaluado, disminuido, mejorado, transformado
-Resultar contaminado, contagiado, herido, infectado, intoxicado, lastimado
-Resultar aplastado, apuñalado, arrollado, asesinado, atacado, atropellado, calcinado, carbonizado, desfigurado, destrozado, golpeado, herido, lesionado, maltratado, muerto
