incluyendo, incluido, incluso, inclusive |
When it comes to translating the word including into Spanish, we are faced with a somewhat confusing array of options.
One of the reasons that it can be tricky to translate is the fact that, as well as being a verb in continuous (present participle) form, including is a conjunction. See the following examples:
1. Please attach your CV to the email, including any other relevant documents — Se ruega adjuntar su currículum, incluyendo cualquier documento que considere relevante (present participle)
2. All relevant documents, including your CV, must be attached — Todos los documentos relevantes, incluido su currículum, deben adjuntarse (conjunction)
While some people consider incluyendo to be an Anglicism when translating the conjunction including, it is accepted by the RAE (along with dependiendo, excluyendo and exceptuando) and commonly used as a gerundio semilexicalizado, i.e. it has taken on a meaning of its own and behaves differently from normal gerunds.1-2
Incluyendo is seen more in Latin American countries, which often have more of an English influence.
"Suele abusarse de este 'incluyendo' (including) cuando lo incluido agota la enumeración lógica o sólo es una excusa para decir lo que sigue en un escrito".4
Depending on the dictionary you choose, the translation varies: Oxford Dictionary, for example,which tends to use more Latin American Spanish, translates including literally as incluyendo in most examples. 5
E.g. He wants to see us all, including you — Quiere vernos a todos, incluyéndote a ti
In the Collins Dictionary, which tends to focus on Spanish from Spain, none of the examples give 'incluyendo'.6
E.g. That applies to everyone, including you — Eso va por todos, tú incluido
So, if we want to avoid risking the use of possible Anglicisms, when we translate including to Spanish we have to think about what it is we really want to say.
1) When we simply want to mention examples, rather than their necessary inclusion, a good translation would be entre ellos.
| Eight people, including two children, were rescued |
— Ocho personas, entre ellas dos niños, fueron rescatadas (Ocho personas, incluyendo a dos niños, fueron rescatadas)

| I have worked for many companies, including Motorola |
— He trabajado para muchas empresas, entre ellas Motorola (He trabajado para muchas empresas, incluyendo Motorola ) |
2) When clarifying the inclusion of a part of the whole thing or quantity, often made clear with quantifiers such as 'all', 'everyone', 'no one', 'always', etc., a good translation is usually incluido.
| All members of staff, including part-time workers, must clock in on arrival | — Toda las plantilla, incluidos los trabajadres de media jornada, deben fichar al llegar |
| Everyone has to go, including you | — Todos tienen que ir, tú incluido |
| It cost us 100 euros (altogether), bills included/including bills | — Nos costó 100 euros, gastos incluidos |
3) When the inclusion of the thing may be surprising or unexpected, often equivalent to 'even', it can translate as incluso.
Incluso: "Indica que algo o alguien se incluye en la situación descrita, aunque ello sorprenda o se espere que no fuera así".7
| In the end everyone came, including Juan! | — Al final vinieron todos, ¡incluso Juan! |
| We all liked it, including the most critical of us | — A todos nos gustó, incluso a los más críticos |
| You'll have to work every day, including Sundays |
1.—Tendrás que trabajar todos los días, los domingos incluidos. (matter-of-factly) 2.— Tendrás que trabajar todos los días, incluso los domingos (possibly unexpected or surprising) |
4) When wanting to specify the inclusion of the first and/or last element in a list or series, it is often best translated as inclusive. (Inclusive is also commonly used in Latin America instead of incluso.) 8
Inclusive: "Pospuesto al término que designa el primer o último elemento de una serie o enumeración, indica que este también se incluye en ella".9
| You´ll have to work from Monday up to and including Saturday | — Tendrás que trabajar de lunes hasta sábado inclusive |

5) To say 'not including', a common translation is sin incluir.
It has five rooms, not including the storeroom — Tiene cinco habitaciones, sin incluir el almacén
