parar vs. pararse
Used as an intransitive verb, in some contexts, parar is very similar to the pronominal form pararse.
In general, when describing a person or thing in motion coming to a standstill/stopping, pararse is used. However, there are some exceptions/ factors to bear in mind:
1) When referring to animate objects, or objects made animate by unnamed people (e.g. el taxi, el autobús), scheduled or planned stops tend to use parar. In this case, rather than describing a moving object coming to a stop/standstill, we are describing the interruption of an activity or making a stop.1
-El autobús no (se) para en Madrid — The bus doesn't stop in Madrid
-Mañana no pararemos en Madrid — We won't stop in Madrid tomorrow
-Sabemos que aquella noche el taxi (se) paró delante de la tienda — We know the taxi stopped in front of the shop that night
-Por eso, el día de su funeral, la comitiva fúnebre paró delante de nuestro cine — That's why, on the day of her funeral, the funeral procession stopped in front of our cinema
2) When the subject itself physically stops moving, pararse is generally used. However, parar is sometimes used transitively, where the means of transport (the direct object) is omitted.
-Al final, el autobús se paró en Madrid — In the end, the bus stopped in Madrid
-Me paré a tomar un café — I stopped to have a coffee (I myself stopped moving or thinking)
-Paramos (el coche) a echar gasolina — We stopped to get fuel
-Paré (el vehículo) delante de la tienda — I stopped in front of the shop
-En el trayecto pararon en la barriada de El Palmar — On the way they stopped in the neighborhood of El Palmar
3) When referring to inanimate objects coming to a stop/standstill, pararse is used in nearly all cases, including unexpected stops or breakdowns.1
-El coche se me paró — My car stalled
-El reloj se ha parado — The clock has stopped
-El tiempo se paró — Time stopped
-El proyecto se paró — The project came to a standstill
4) Parar (de) is used when talking about 'stopping doing something', where often the action is omitted. Once again, pararse usually refers to movement or motion.
-No pares (de contármelo), me está gustando el cuento — Don't stop, I'm enjoying the story
-No para de quejarse — He won't stop complaining
-Estaba arreglando el coche y paré (de arreglarlo) a fumar un cigarrillo — I was fixing the car, and I stopped to have a smoke
-Ese ruido no para (de sonar) — That noise won't stop
-No pararé hasta que te vea muerto — I won't stop until I see you dead (stop doing whatever it is I must do)
-Me paré cuando llegué a Madrid — I stopped when I got to Madrid (physically stop movement)
5) Pararse is used more to stop in the sense of 'to pause to think about something', rather than stopping doing something.
-¿Te has parado a pensar en las consecuencias? — Have you stopped to think about the consequences? ('stopped' figuratively speaking)
-Espera. Lo estás haciendo mal. Para un segundo y piensa en lo que estás haciendo — Wait. You're not doing it right. Stop for a second and think about what you're doing (stop what you are doing)
6) Similar to other pronominal verbs, when pararse is used passively there is possibile ambiguity. In such cases, when the noun goes before the verb the passive meaning is possible, while the noun after the verb does not leave this option.2
-Se paró el tren porque la policía notó algo raro — The train was stopped because the police noticed something strange
→El tren se paró en mitad del trayecto — The train stopped half way
-Se paró el proyecto — The project came to a standstill/was stopped
→El proyecto se paró — The project came to a standstill
-Se cerró la ventana — The window closed/was closed
→La ventana se cerró — The window closed
7) Note that in much of Latin America, pararse can also mean 'to stand/get up'.
Los niños se pararon para saludar al invitado — The children stood up to welcome the guest
