Pues nada
As discussed previously, pues is often used as a crutch/filler word (muletilla) to maintain the flow of discourse, introduce an explanation, show some relationship between the information, or simply to keep the listener's attention.
-Pues, nos vemos mañana — Well, see you tomorrow
-¿Qué quieres? -Pues, me gustaría pedirte un favor — -What do you want - Well, I'd like to ask you a favour
Nada, meanwhile, is often used to play down the importance of what follows.
"La presencia de nada sugiere que niega importancia a su respuesta o la considera intrascendente".1
-¿Y qué dijo? -Nada, que me llamaría otro día — And what did he say? -Just that he would call me another day
-Y nada, que me quedé un rato y después me fui con ellos — Anyway, I stayed a while then went with them
-¿Quién era ese tío? -Nada, un amigo de mi hermano — -Who was that guy? -Ahh, no one... just a friend of my brother's
The combination of pues+nada forms an expression that links two ideas in some way while showing that what continues is expected or lacks importance.
"[...] resta importancia a lo que se va a decir o se interpreta como previsible o esperable".2
-Pues nada, nos vemos mañana — Well, anyway, see you tomorrow (expected, already known, or not considered important)
-¿Qué pasa entonces? Pues nada, que no te llaman y ya está — What happens then? Well, they just don't call you and that's it (nothing unexpected or particularly important)
It can be used to summarize a conclusion, often expressing resignation when faced with an expected outcome; así que nada is used to similar effect.
-No para de llover -Pues nada, nos quedamos en casa — -It won't stop raining -Well, I guess we're staying at home then
-Lo siento, tío, pero no puedo ir -Pues nada — -Sorry, mate, but I can't go -Well, that's it then
-Pues nada, lo que necesites me lo dices — Well, anyway, if you need anything, let me know
-Dicen que no van a dejar que nos marchemos a casa, así que nada, ¡a trabajar! — They say they're not going to let us go home, so that's it –back to work!
