Vamos, vayamos, vámonos, vayámonos |
The verb ir is unusual in that when using the first-person plural imperative, vamos is generally used instead of the subjunctive vayamos.
"Como resto de su antiguo valor de subjuntivo, la forma vamos se emplea, con más frecuencia que vayamos, con finalidad exhortativa: «Vamos, Johnny, vamos a casa que es tarde» (Cortázar Reunión [Arg. 1983]); la forma de subjuntivo vayamos, con este sentido, ha quedado casi relegada a la lengua literaria: «Vayámonos de aquí»". RAE
The difference between vamos and vámonos lies in the change in meaning of ir when used pronominally as irse (see se aspectual), which means 'to leave' a place rather than 'to go' to another place. Often this difference can be quite subtle to the untrained ear.
Vamos, llego tarde (vayamos-literary) — Let's go. I'm running late
→Vámonos de aquí (vayámonos-literary) — Let's get out of here/let's leave
Vamos a Portugal — Let's go to Portugal / We're going to Portugal [Focus on the destination or movement to a place]
→Vámonos a Portugal — Let's leave for Portugal [Focus on abandoning current location or movement away from a place; ≈'vámonos de aquí, iremos a portugal' ]
Fui al centro comercial — I went to the shopping centre
→Me fui al centro comercial — I went off to the shopping centre
Note that vayamos must be used for the subjunctive mood in all other cases (not imperative).
¿Quieres que vayamos juntos? — Do you want us to go together?
Vayamos donde vayamos, nos encontrarán — Wherever we go, they'll find us
As discussed previously, in spoken Spanish especially, vamos is frequently used to clarify, correct, or expand upon something that has been previously said.

-Mi hermano no trabaja, ni estudia, ni hace nada en realidad -Vamos, que es un 'matao' — -My brother doesn't work or study. Actually, he doesn't do anything -You mean he's a loser
