diferente a, de o que

When comparing two things, the adjectives diferente and distinto may be followed by a, de and que, depending on the following factors:

1. The prepositions a and de can be used interchangeably when both items are nouns, pronouns, or noun phrases.

"Se usan indistintamente las preposiciones 'a' y 'de' cuando el segundo término es un nombre, un pronombre o un grupo nominal, incluidos los que integran una oración de relativo".¹

 

-La paella es diferente al/del arroz

-Esa casa es distinta de/a aquella

-Soy diferente a/de ti

 

-Eso es diferente a/de lo que me habían contado

2. When the second item of the comparison is a noun with the ellipses of a verb, the conjunction que should be used.²

-Es distinto beber cerveza que vino (que beber vino)

-Me siento diferente llevando falda que pantalón (que llevando pantalón)

3.When the second item is a verb in infinitive, que is preferred in most contexts, but a can also be used.²

-Es distinto beber cerveza que (a) beber vino

-Hacerlo durante la noche es diferente que (a) hacerlo durante el día

4. When the second item is a subordinate clause with the conjugated verb, the preposition a should be used to avoid the cacophony of que que.

-Es distinto que me prestes el dinero a que me lo regales

-Que te diga eso es diferente a que te diga lo otro

5. When the second item is a preposition, prepositional phrase, or adverbial, que should normally be used, except following the relative adverbs 'como' and 'cuando'.3-4

-Es distinto hacerlo aquí que allí

-Hace un tiempo distinto que en España

-Escucharlo alto es diferente que bajo

-La sensación antes es diferente que después

 

-La situación es distinta ahora que cuando éramos jóvenes [Comparando ahora con cuando éramos jóvenes; la misma entidad (la situación) pero en dos tiempos diferentes]

→Esta situación es distinta de/a cuando éramos jóvenes [Comparando esta situación con (la situación) cuando éramos jóvenes; dos entidades diferentes]

-La situación es distinta a/de como era hace unos años

6. Finally, both diferente and distinto can also be used as adverbs. As discussed previously, in some cases both the adverb (adverbio adjetival) and the adjective (complemento predicativo) can be used. The adjective must agree with the noun, while the adverb is invariable.³

-Ahora pintas diferente [Adverb applied to the verb 'pintar']

-Tu voz suena distinto/distinta [Adverb applied to the verb 'sonar', or adjective applied to the subject 'voz']

-Las espinacas saben distinto/distintas [Adverb applied to the verb 'saber', or adjective applied to the subject 'espinacas']

 

-Pensamos diferente (diferentes) [Adverb applied to the verb pensar; we are not different, only our way of thinking]
